Yankees Lose 2-1 to Dodgers After Cole Allows Go-Ahead Homer in Seventh
New York fell to Los Angeles on Friday night when Gerrit Cole surrendered a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning. Manager Aaron Boone accepted responsibility for the decision to leave the starter in the game.

The New York Yankees lost 2-1 to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night after manager Aaron Boone elected to keep starter Gerrit Cole in the game for the seventh inning. Cole had issued a leadoff walk to Mookie Betts with the Yankees leading 1-0. Boone walked to the mound and asked Cole if he had one more pitch in him.
Cole threw seven more pitches and fell behind 0-2 to Max Muncy before the Dodgers third baseman hit a slider into the second deck in right field for a two-run homer that gave Los Angeles the lead for good. Boone said afterward that the decision fell on him. "Sometimes you've got to take it out of their hands," he said.
"It's tough, especially when Gerrit's throwing the ball as well as he did tonight. But, at the same time, we're teed up there [with Headrick]. " Cole finished with eight strikeouts and one walk over six innings on 103 pitches in his 10th start since returning from Tommy John surgery.
The 35-year-old right-hander allowed the one run. Roki Sasaki limited the Yankees to one unearned run on five hits over 5⅔ innings with five strikeouts and one walk. New York's lone run scored in the fourth inning on a Jasson Dominguez double, an error by Andy Pages and a passed ball.
