Yankees Place José Caballero on Injured List With Finger Fracture, Recall Anthony Volpe

Com. Volpe had been optioned to Triple-A last week after his rehab assignment expired, with Caballero delivering strong play on both sides of the ball to change the Yankees’ original plan to reinsert Volpe as their starting shortstop. Caballero's injury occurred when he dove back into first base during the ninth inning of Sunday’s game against the Brewers, injuring his right middle finger.

He pinch-ran in the ninth inning on Monday but then drove back to New York to undergo an MRI and see a hand specialist and team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad on Tuesday morning. Anthony Volpe underwent October surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

By the time he was ready to come back, he had lost his job to Caballero. Volpe played for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders during a game against the Worcester Red Sox before his recall. The sequence began with Volpe's option to Triple-A last week after his rehab assignment expired.

Caballero's performance on both sides of the ball prompted the Yankees to keep him in the majors. That decision held until the injury in the ninth inning against the Brewers on Sunday forced a roster change. A source confirmed the Yankees' roster moves to The Post.

The team is playing a game against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Tuesday as the moves take effect. Caballero had been a steady presence until the diving play at first base altered his status.
