Yankees Reliever Yoendrys Gomez Traded to Minnesota Twins

The New York Yankees traded pitcher Yoendrys Gomez to the Minnesota Twins, according to a report by El Extrabase’s Daniel Alvarez-Montes. Gomez first joined the Yankees system in 2017 and made his major-league debut with the team in 2023. After logging more than 23 innings over three years with the Yankees, he moved through several organizations before beginning the current season with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Gomez posted a 6.23 ERA in nine games with the Rays before the trade. The 26-year-old has largely worked in a long relief role in the majors despite starting most often in the minors. The Minnesota Twins are in last place in the American League Central and rank among the worst-performing teams in Major League Baseball this season.

The team is expected to use Gomez in long relief.

The Yankees are leading the American League in several offensive and pitching categories this season. Their bullpen has shown a notable drop-off after its top five relievers, according to reporting by The Athletic. The team has used a revolving group of arms in lower-leverage situations, including multiple pitchers who have moved in and out of the relief corps.

The Yankees did not pursue a reunion with Gomez as they evaluated options for additional relief help.

Gomez exhausted his final option season in 2024, placing him on the fringe of roster consideration. He pitched for the Yankees, Dodgers and White Sox last year before being traded to the Rays in November. The addition provides the Twins with another long relief option as several scheduled starters are expected to require significant bullpen support in upcoming games.
