Yankees Score 13 Runs in Third Inning, Defeat Athletics 13-8

The New York Yankees scored 13 runs in the third inning and beat the Athletics 13-8 on May 31, 2026, in West Sacramento, Calif. The inning was the Yankees' first 13-run frame since June 21, 2005, and one run short of the franchise record set July 6, 1920, against the Washington Senators. Aaron Judge delivered a heated message to teammates after the first two innings.

"I just felt like we were a little asleep there that first two innings. I expect more out of the guys, and I know they expect more of themselves. A couple of choice words there just to get it going. The boys responded," Judge said.

Athletics starter Jacob Lopez retired all six New York batters in the first two innings. Anthony Volpe opened the third with a single, and Lopez failed to retire any of the next seven hitters he faced. Lopez walked two more batters after Volpe's single, then failed to cover first on Paul Goldschmidt's bases-loaded grounder, allowing a run to score on an infield single. Ben Rice followed with a two-run double. Judge added a bloop single to center, and Cody Bellinger delivered an RBI single that ended Lopez's night.

The next five batters reached safely against reliever Michael Kelly. The sequence marked the first time any team had started an inning with 12 straight batters reaching safely in 17 seasons, according to Sportradar. The Boston Red Sox were the previous team to accomplish the feat on May 7, 2009, against Cleveland.

It was also the first time the Yankees had 12 consecutive batters reach safely in an inning since the first game of a doubleheader on Sept. The Yankees scored 10 runs before recording an out. Goldschmidt struck out for the first out of the inning.

Rice then hit a two-run triple, giving him two multirun extra-base hits in the frame. "To bat around with no outs, it's incredible," Judge said. "That's what this team is capable of doing. " "Glad we were able to make it stand up," Boone said.
