Director Yeon Sang-ho's upcoming film "Paradise Lost" will have its world premiere at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, Yonhap reported. The mystery thriller is scheduled for screening in the Special Presentations section during the event, which runs from September 10 to 20, 2026. CJ ENM, the film's distributor, announced the selection Tuesday.
The story centers on So-young, played by Kim Hyun-joo, who relies on an artificial intelligence program to recall her missing son, Sun-woo, portrayed by Bae Hyun-sung. She becomes unsettled when the son returns after nine years. Yeon described the project, adapted from the Korean novel "Black Inferno," as one of his darkest works.
It depicts a mother caught between the version of her son she reconstructed through AI and the real individual who reappears. The Special Presentations section has previously hosted several prominent Korean films, including Bong Joon-ho's "Mother" from 2009 and "Parasite" from 2019, Park Chan-wook's "The Handmaiden" from 2016 and "Decision to Leave" from 2022, Kim Jee-woon's "The Age of Shadows" from 2016, and Ryoo Seung-wan's "I, the Executioner" from 2024.
Yeon returns to the festival after his mystery thriller "The Ugly" screened there in 2025.
