New York church to honor Ukrainian president with award at September dinner
The St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church-National Shrine will present its Beacon of Hope Award to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at a Sept. 26 dinner in Manhattan. The event is also a fundraiser for the shrine.

The St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church-National Shrine will present its Beacon of Hope Award to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at a Sept. 26 dinner at Cipriani South Street in Manhattan. The invitation described Zelensky as a recipient who illuminated the path forward in times of great challenge for leading his country's defense.
Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, and the war continues.
The church was destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001, and reopened four years ago in an elevated park overlooking the World Trade Center memorial plaza. Zelensky previously accepted the Four Freedoms Awards from the Prime Minister of the Netherlands on behalf of the Ukrainian people and received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award in 2022.

He said added security will be provided for the event involving a leader of a foreign country. The dinner is also a fundraiser for the St. Nicholas Shrine.
