New York City Comptroller Report Examines Artificial Intelligence Effects on Local Jobs

New York City Comptroller Mark Levin released a report on Thursday stating that artificial intelligence could eliminate thousands of jobs in the city as soon as this year. The report examines five possible outcomes for AI adoption, ranging from productivity gains that add jobs to scenarios that reduce employment.

Levin assigned the highest probability, 35 percent, to an “AI-Empowered Economy” scenario that projects an average of 52,000 new jobs annually through 2030.

A second scenario labeled “AI Falls Flat” carries a 25 percent probability and forecasts the loss of about 52,500 jobs this year if AI investment declines. Other outcomes include faster AI adoption that replaces some positions and an “AI shockwave” that disrupts white-collar work.

Levin described a “Productivity Boon” as the most optimistic case, with a 15 percent likelihood, in which AI increases both productivity and compensation without displacing workers.

The report notes that New York City hosts hundreds of firms developing applied AI and roughly one million office workers who could face disruption.
