A state budget measure requires drivers with 16 or more speed camera violations in one year to install GPS-based speed limiters. The rule takes effect about one year after the governor signs the budget and applies only to future violations.
New York PostDrivers who receive 16 or more speed camera tickets in a year will be required to install speed-limiting devices that use GPS to prevent travel above posted limits. The requirement was approved as part of the state budget passed Tuesday and will apply only to violations recorded after the law takes effect.
Drivers who do not install the device face fines of $1,500 to $2,500. Registration can be suspended if the device is not installed within 45 days of the deadline. Tampering with or bypassing a device carries the same fines, a one-year registration suspension, and extended use of the limiter.
The measure expands the city’s school zone camera program, which issues $50 tickets for vehicles traveling more than 10 miles per hour above the limit within a quarter-mile of schools. City data show about 14,600 vehicles continue to trigger cameras despite repeated fines. A Transportation Alternatives analysis found many of these vehicles are late-model luxury models.
Sealy-McCrorey, whose 13-year-old daughter was killed by a speeding driver in 2024, said the law will slow the most reckless drivers. “New York is putting these super speeders on notice,” the governor said at a press conference earlier this month. “You’ll not flout our laws, and you’ll not endanger children, pedestrians and other drivers who deserve to feel safe.”
