New York City Mayor Launches Commission on Government Efficiency
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani has created a Commission on Government Efficiency to review city spending. The new body follows earlier budget measures that included a withdrawn property-tax proposal and state funding secured by Gov. Kathy Hochul.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the creation of the Commission on Government Efficiency to examine city operations and spending. The commission's stated goal is to identify savings that can be redirected toward affordability programs, including housing construction.
Earlier this year Mamdani proposed a property-tax increase that he later withdrew after Gov. Kathy Hochul secured $8 billion in state funding for the city. The city has also proposed a new tax on multimillion-dollar second homes projected to raise $500 million and has considered measures such as selling vacant office space and ending Slack subscriptions.
Mamdani said the commission will focus on keeping city services aligned with residents' needs rather than reducing services. 5 billion toward additional housing construction as part of its affordability plans. Mamdani stated that identified savings would be reinvested locally instead of used solely for spending cuts.
