New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted instructions on X directing residents to set air conditioners to 78 degrees, turn off unused lights and electronics, and unplug devices during a heat wave. The city expanded emergency heat measures for the holiday weekend, with officials warning that temperatures could feel as hot as 112 degrees.
Mamdani stated that city buildings would maintain the 78-degree rule, dim or turn off lights during peak demand, ask private partners to follow suit, and power down non-essential equipment.
The post was viewed more than 36.5 million times. Mamdani was elected mayor in November 2025 and sworn in on January 1, 2026. In the week before July 2, his slate of endorsed candidates won all primary elections in New York City.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris called Mamdani after those primaries. On the July 2 episode of Real Time, Bill Maher called Mamdani a straight up communist and said Democrats will lose more elections if they deny it. Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s office for comment.
