New York state legislators introduced a proposal Monday to amend the state constitution's redistricting rules. The measure would keep the existing bipartisan commission but impose tighter deadlines on its work and allow the legislature to approve maps by simple majority.

The amendment would also remove a current ban on drawing lines that favor political parties. If approved by voters in 2027, the changes would apply to congressional districts drawn for the 2028 elections.

Current state rules require two legislative approvals over two years before any constitutional change can reach the ballot. Democrats said the new proposal is intended to respond to redistricting actions in other states.

" U.S. Rep. " The proposal is expected to pass the legislature this week. It would still need a second approval next year before appearing on the 2027 ballot.
