SemaforThe New York Times is reviewing columns by opinion writer Nicholas Kristof after a report found he did not disclose that some people he wrote about had donated to his unsuccessful campaign for governor of Oregon. Semafor reported on Monday that Kristof wrote favorably about Bill Gates without noting that Gates and his former wife each gave $50,000 to the campaign.
The same report said Kristof quoted McKinsey Global Managing Partner Bob Sternfels and the late Harvard professor Joseph Nye without disclosing their prior donations.
A Times spokesperson told Fox News Digital that previous political donations by some people Kristof mentioned in his columns should have been made more clear to readers. Editors from Times Opinion are reviewing the articles to determine whether further clarifications are needed.
The paper had stated when Kristof returned to the Times in 2022 that he would either refrain from writing about financial supporters of his gubernatorial campaign or disclose those relationships.
The disclosure issue comes as Kristof remains under scrutiny over a May 11 opinion column that reported allegations of sexual violence against Palestinian detainees. Israeli officials have accused the Times of publishing defamatory material and have threatened legal action. The Times has defended the May column, stating it was backed by independent studies and rejecting calls for retraction.

The Angelina Jolie Family Trust and Abigail Disney each contributed $10,000.”
