Yukon Resident Grows Pineapple Indoors Over Nine Years in Whitehorse
Alex Oberg of Whitehorse, Yukon, cultivated a pineapple plant from a rooted crown over nine years, resulting in a homegrown fruit last fall. The plant required minimal maintenance in a sunny indoor location and a summer greenhouse stint. Oberg described the fruit as tasting like pineapple, slightly sour, and plans to propagate a new plant from its crown.

He planted the crown in soil and placed it in a south-facing window, where it received standard houseplant care, including occasional watering. The process involved minimal effort, with the plant largely left to grow on its own.
After several years without fruit, Oberg moved the plant to a greenhouse during one summer to encourage development, but no pineapple appeared that season. The plant continued to expand indoors, eventually reaching heights comparable to Oberg's stature, with long, sharp leaves that posed a risk of injury, particularly to the eyes during watering.
Oberg noted the plant had become cumbersome but persisted with its care.
In the fall of the previous year, a small pineapple began forming among the leaves, which Oberg described as exciting. Over the following months, the fruit matured to a golden-yellow color and developed a pineapple aroma. Oberg harvested it, cut it open, and tasted it, finding it sweet with a slightly sour flavor; he suggested it might have benefited from additional ripening time.
Pineapples originate from South America and require warm, humid conditions with ample sunlight, which are not typical in Yukon. Paul Zammit, a horticulture professor at Niagara College in Ontario and a CBC Radio gardening columnist, stated that pineapples usually fruit in 18 months to two years under ideal conditions.
Zammit, who has grown a pineapple plant himself but did not see it fruit, described Oberg's achievement in the northern climate as a notable accomplishment given the challenging environment.
Oberg is not the first person in Yukon to grow a pineapple; a resident of Dawson City, located further north, cultivated two sizable pineapples in an off-grid cabin a few years ago, achieving results in less time than nine years. CBC reported that Oberg's dedication highlights the feasibility of such cultivation with patience in non-tropical regions.
The stakes involve personal satisfaction and experimentation in home horticulture, affecting hobbyist gardeners interested in exotic plants.
Looking ahead, Oberg has saved the crown from his harvested pineapple to propagate a new plant, potentially yielding fruit by 2035 if successful. He emphasized that enduring the plant's growth phase makes the outcome worthwhile. This project demonstrates how basic indoor techniques can adapt tropical species to colder climates, offering inspiration for similar endeavors.
