Zcash Proposes Ironwood Upgrade to Address 2022 Orchard Counterfeiting Bug
ZEC rebounded 45% from last week’s low near $300 after Shielded Labs disclosed a counterfeiting flaw in the Orchard privacy pool. The Ironwood plan would move users to a repaired pool and let anyone verify the total ZEC supply.

Zcash developers proposed the Ironwood upgrade on June 6, 2026, to move users to a new privacy pool built with repaired code and to block creation of new coins in the old Orchard pool. The proposal would let anyone running Zcash software add up balances across pools and confirm that no more than the correct amount of ZEC exists.
As coins migrate out of the old pool, any counterfeit ZEC would either be exposed or stranded and destroyed.
Shielded Labs disclosed the counterfeiting bug in Zcash’s Orchard pool, which had remained undetected since 2022 and could have allowed an attacker to create unlimited fake ZEC. Developers, including Shielded Labs, the Zcash Foundation, and the Zcash Open Development Lab, patched the flaw within days through emergency network upgrades coordinated with mining pools ViaBTC and Foundry.
ZEC traded around $437 on Monday after rebounding about 45% from the low near $300 it hit on Friday, according to CoinDesk data.
The token remains down roughly 22% over the week. Shielded Labs said it believes exploitation of the bug was unlikely. ” Developers have not given a firm timeline for the Ironwood upgrade, stating that the work to build, test, and coordinate the changes could take longer than expected.
