Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has told European Union leaders that the time has come to open the formal process for Ukraine to join the bloc. In a letter sent Friday, Zelenskyy rejected a German proposal for associate membership, saying the arrangement would leave Ukraine “voiceless” because it would not grant voting rights inside EU institutions.

” He argued that associate status would prevent Kyiv from advancing its interests during accession negotiations. Ukraine has stepped up its membership campaign after Hungary’s former prime minister Viktor Orban left office last month. Under Orban, Budapest repeatedly blocked progress on Ukraine’s bid and delayed aid approvals.

Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces have retaken almost 600 square kilometres of territory since January. He added that the gains are increasing pressure on Moscow to enter negotiations. Ukraine struck a chemical plant in Russia’s Perm region and an oil refinery in Yaroslavl, according to statements from Kyiv.

Zelenskyy said the chemical facility supplied components for Russian military production and that operations there have now stopped. Russia’s emergency ministry reported that a Ukrainian strike on a dormitory in the Russian-controlled town of Starobilsk killed 12 people and injured 36 others.

Kyiv denied targeting the dormitory and said it struck a nearby drone command unit. ” Zelenskyy also stated that about 86,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the start of the year, with another 59,000 seriously wounded.
