Zoox unveiled a refreshed robotaxi design on Wednesday that includes a lighter interior color scheme, more ergonomic seats, larger cupholders, a more vivid touchscreen, and two-way audio capabilities for communication with riders and first responders, Insider reported.
The updates are intended to reduce visual distractions and help riders locate items left behind. The core vehicle design remains unchanged.
Zoox stated it can produce up to 100 of the updated robotaxis per week at its Hayward, California factory. The 220,000-square-foot facility has the capacity to produce 10,000 robotaxis a year. The company filed a petition with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration seeking a temporary exemption from some federal safety standards that assume a human driver and traditional controls.
Zoox currently offers free robotaxi rides to the public in limited areas of Las Vegas and San Francisco. It plans to expand service to Austin and Miami later this year. The updated vehicles will join the existing fleet across Zoox markets and become available to riders later this year as they come off the production line, the company said.
A Zoox spokesperson told Insider the company is ramping production in a deliberate, phased manner and does not need to build 10,000 robotaxis at present.
