Alexander Zverev defeated Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Wednesday. The French Open champion improved to 17-1 in major matches this year. Fritz received a medical timeout for treatment on his right knee during the second set.
He said the knee began bothering him three games into the match. "I mean, preface what I'm saying by -- I don't know what kind of difference it would have made in the match," Fritz said. " Fritz had won his previous seven matches against Zverev.
His last loss to the German came in the Rome quarterfinals in May 2024. The result extended the U.S. men's drought without a major title to 90 consecutive tournaments since Andy Roddick won the 2003 U.S.
Open. Zverev will face British wild card Arthur Fery in the semifinals on Friday. Fery defeated No. 9 seed Flavio Cobolli in straight sets. "I hope to play two more matches here," Zverev said. " Zverev is ranked No.
3 in the world and seeded second at Wimbledon. A win over Fery would move him to No. 2 in the ATP rankings on Monday. He is making his first Wimbledon semifinal appearance and is the fifth active men's player to reach the semifinals at all four majors.
