Zverev defeats Fritz in Wimbledon quarterfinals to reach semifinals

Alexander Zverev defeated Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Wednesday. Zverev, the French Open champion, improved to 17-1 in major matches this year. The result extended the U.S. men's drought without a major title to 90 consecutive tournaments since Andy Roddick won the 2003 U.S. Open.

He said the knee began bothering him three games into the match. "I mean, preface what I'm saying by -- I don't know what kind of difference it would have made in the match," Fritz said. "He's going to be extremely tough to beat the way he's serving." Fritz had won his previous seven matches against Zverev before Wednesday's loss.

Fery defeated No. 9 seed Flavio Cobolli in straight sets. "I hope to play two more matches here," Zverev said. "We'll see how that goes, but for now extremely happy to be in semifinal and especially [winning] against Taylor, who I haven't beat for two years." Zverev is ranked No. 3 in the world and seeded second at Wimbledon. A win over Fery would move him to No. 2 in the ATP rankings on Monday.
