A 12-year-old student from Sag Harbor, New York, died after an inflatable raft overturned on the Lehigh River in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, during a school field trip. m. Wednesday. The Carbon County Coroner’s Office said in a news release that the boy did not resurface immediately after the capsize. m. An autopsy determined the cause of death was accidental drowning.

District superintendent Jeff Nichols wrote in an email to families that the loss was deeply felt by the school community. "There are no words to adequately express the depth of this loss," Nichols said. " Nichols added that the district extended condolences to the family and would keep them in its thoughts and prayers.

Guncay had moved from Ecuador to the United States three years earlier and was living in Sag Harbor ahead of his parents, according to a cousin interviewed by NBC New York. The cousin described him as a soccer and art enthusiast who had learned English.

A GoFundMe campaign established for the family reported raising more than $207,000 of its $350,000 goal as of Friday. The page described Guncay as a kind and athletic sixth grader.
