Thousands of demonstrators marched in downtown Buenos Aires on June 3, 2026, for the annual Ni Una Menos protest, demanding stronger government measures against gender-based violence. The gathering drew added participation after the May killing of 14-year-old Agostina Vega in Córdoba. Agostina Vega disappeared on May 23 after arriving at a family friend’s home to pick up a gift.

Her body was found a week later in a drainage ditch. Initial autopsy results indicated she had been sexually assaulted and hanged before being dismembered. Agostina’s family filed a missing-person report the morning after her disappearance.

More than 80 hours passed before a child-abduction alert was issued across the province. A taxi driver reported driving her to the home of 33-year-old Claudio Barrelier, an ex-boyfriend of her mother, and security-camera footage confirmed the account. Police raided Barrelier’s house three days after the alert.

He is in custody as the main suspect and denies the charges. Investigators noted he had been arrested for abducting a young woman a year earlier but was released on $3,500 bail after 20 days. Protesters carried photos of Agostina Vega and other victims while criticizing cuts to programs supporting survivors of gender violence.

Demonstrators also directed anger at local law enforcement over delays in the investigation. A woman is killed every 30 hours in Argentina, according to data cited by march organizers. Lawyers at the Center for Legal and Social Studies counted 63 legally registered femicides this year, while other advocates compiled lists exceeding 100 names.

Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva has refused to classify Agostina’s death as a femicide, stating that a homicide is not defined solely by the duration of the act. Advocates maintain that the classification carries mandatory life sentences and is essential for prosecution and prevention policies.
