The 2026 Open Championship will offer a record total purse of $17.75 million, with the winner receiving $3.2 million, tournament officials announced Tuesday. The event at Royal Birkdale begins with first-round tee times on Thursday and marks the 154th edition organized by the R&A. The winner's share rose $100,000 from last year while the overall purse increased $500,000, according to Usa Today.
The final men's major of the season will feature a 156-golfer field, with only the top 70 players and ties advancing after Friday's second round. Players who miss the cut will receive $12,900, $10,750 or $9,100 based on their position after two rounds. Additional prize money will be added if more than 70 professionals advance, decreasing by $125 per extra qualifier down to a minimum of $39,450.
The Open Championship purse remains smaller than the other three majors. The Masters and U.S. Open each distributed $22.5 million this year, while the PGA Championship paid out $20.5 million in May.
