42 Dead in Chad Water Clashes; U.S. Strike Targets Drug Boat, Killing 3; Texas Tornadoes Kill 2 and Damage Homes
At least 42 people died in eastern Chad after a family dispute over a water point escalated into reprisals near the Sudan border. The US military killed three men in a strike on a suspected narco-trafficking boat in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, raising the campaign's toll to 185. A thunderstorm spawned tornadoes that killed two and damaged homes in northern Texas.
yna.co.krIgote, Chad (Substrate) -- At least 42 people were killed and 10 wounded in eastern Chad after a clash between two families over a water point escalated into a cycle of reprisals, Chad's deputy prime minister Limane Mahamat said late Sunday during a visit to the village.
The clashes occurred Saturday in Igote, in Wadi Fira province near the Sudan border. The injured were evacuated to the provincial health center.
The reprisals spread over a large area, prompting army intervention. Mahamat said the military's swift response contained the clashes and that the situation is now under control. A customary mediation process was launched in the village, and judicial proceedings were announced to determine criminal responsibility.
Mahamat stated the government will take all necessary measures to prevent destabilization of the border area. Intercommunal clashes over resources occur frequently in Chad. Last year, clashes between farmers and herders in southwestern Chad left 42 people dead and several homes burned.
Chad's eastern provinces have hosted refugees fleeing the war in Sudan for several months, increasing pressure on resources and security. Hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees have entered Chad since the conflict began. In February, Chad closed its border with Sudan until further notice to limit the spread of conflict after multiple crossings by fighters from warring Sudanese factions.
The war in Sudan has killed more than 40,000 people, according to United Nations figures, and forced over 14 million people to flee their homes. In the Eastern Pacific Ocean, the US military killed three men Sunday in a strike on a boat engaged in narco-trafficking operations, US Southern Command stated.
The boat was operated by designated terrorist organizations and transited along known narco-trafficking routes, the command said on X. The military posted a video showing the boat moving in the water before an explosion left it in flames. No US military forces were injured in the operation, US military officials said.
The strike brings the US campaign's death toll to at least 185, according to a tally by Agence France-Presse.
Attacks on boats began last year and have continued since early September, killing at least 186 people in total. The campaign followed a US military buildup in the region, the largest in generations. In January, a raid seized then-Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, who was brought to New York to face drug trafficking charges and has pleaded not guilty.
Clark said. A second person died south of Springtown city limits, where there was significant damage, Parker County Assistant Fire Chief David Pruitt said in an email. An EF-2 tornado with peak winds of 135 mph touched down in the Runaway Bay area, and an EF-1 tornado with peak winds of 105 mph was confirmed in the Springtown area, the National Weather Service said.
M. Saturday, meteorologist Patricia Sanchez with the Fort Worth weather service office said. It moved southeast from around Wichita Falls near the Oklahoma border, passing just west of Fort Worth.
Runaway Bay is about 45 miles northwest of Fort Worth on Lake Bridgeport, and Springtown is about 30 miles northwest of Fort Worth. m. Saturday; Azle is about 10 miles southeast of Springtown.
