Himmat Rai, a 5-year-old resident of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, celebrated his fifth birthday on Saturday at the Maple Ridge Recycling Centre. Rai, who described recycling as his "favourite thing to do," attended the event with over a dozen classmates and two dozen adults.

The Ridge Meadows Recycling Society (RMRS), which operates the centre, stated that this was the first birthday party held there in its more than 50 years of operation.

Rai's interest in recycling began at 18 months old, according to his mother, Joti Muker. During a summer tour of the centre, staff noted Rai's knowledge of recycling and suggested he could host his birthday there, initially as a lighthearted comment. Rai told CBC host Gloria Macarenko that he chose the location because "I love recycling so much."

At the party, attendees observed a tipper truck unloading materials and the formation of 450-kilogram paper bales. Rai described watching the crushing of electronics, including a microwave, fridge, oven, and stove. The centre's electronic sign displayed "happy birthday" throughout the day, and the group concluded with pizza and cake.

Rai's father, Steven Rai, said his son independently sorts recycling materials without guidance and takes them to the curb himself. Rai waves to recycling truck operators every Monday. The RMRS statement noted that the event demonstrated community engagement in waste minimization, recycling, and environmental stewardship.

The party highlights how individual interests can involve community facilities in educational activities. Rai's family and the RMRS coordinated the event to accommodate his enthusiasm. When asked about his future career, Rai stated he wants to be a "recycling man."
