The 444 underperforming stores represent about 3 percent of 7-Eleven's North American base. Of those, 227 locations officially closed by the end of 2024. The rest of the 444 announced locations were phased out through 2025.

7-Eleven has closed more stores than it has opened over the last two years. The company cited weaker foot traffic and shifting consumer behaviors influenced by economic headwinds as reasons for closures.

Move to Larger, Food-Focused Stores 7-Eleven is moving away from small, traditional shops.

The company is betting on larger stores that focus on fresh food and a wider variety of drinks. 7-Eleven is swapping out older shops for new, food-focused designs. 7-Eleven is moving toward a hybrid model that blends a traditional convenience store with a grocery store and a fast-food restaurant.

Some 7-Eleven locations will be turned into wholesale fuel stores. Wholesale fuel stores are kept separate from 7-Eleven's official retail store count. Sales of prepared foods jumped 12 percent across the convenience store sector in a single year.
