AC Milan Close to Naming Ruben Amorim Head Coach Starting in July
The Italian club is set to replace Massimiliano Allegri with the former Manchester United manager after missing Champions League qualification.
CBS SportsAC Milan are on the verge of appointing Ruben Amorim as head coach starting from July, according to multiple reports. The former Manchester United manager will replace Massimiliano Allegri, who left at the end of the 2025-26 season. The club is owned by American private fund RedBird and led by Gerry Cardinale.
RedBird advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic also participated in the decision. The team missed the top four in Serie A last season and failed to qualify for the Champions League. That result prompted the departure of club CEO Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, head of recruitment Geoffrey Moncada, and Allegri.
AC Milan has now made four managerial changes in less than two years. Cardinale and Ibrahimovic spoke with multiple candidates, including former Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and United States men's national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino held two virtual meetings with AC Milan, sources told CBS Sports, and expressed interest in joining after the 2026 World Cup.
Pochettino's candidacy was tied to the possible appointment of former Barcelona sporting director Ramon Planes as sporting director. AC Milan instead chose to pursue Eintracht Frankfurt's Markus Krosche for that role, ending talks with both Pochettino and Planes. Austria national team manager Ralf Rangnick also held multiple meetings with the club about becoming head of football.
Rangnick signed a new contract with the Austrian federation until 2028 on Sunday and will remain in his current post. Cardinale and Ibrahimovic opted against hiring a single director to oversee all football operations, including manager selection. A new era is about to begin at AC Milan, CBS Sports reported.
