ACA Premiums Projected to Rise 14 Percent Median in 2027 After Enhanced Subsidies Expire

ACA plan premiums are projected to rise by double digits in 2027. , showed a median proposed increase of 14 percent, The Hill reported. The 2027 figure would mark the second-highest annual increase since 2018 if approved.
It follows a median 20 percent jump in 2026 premiums, producing a cumulative rise exceeding 33 percent from 2025 levels. Insurers cited rising medical costs for hospitals and prescription drugs, growing demand for specialty medications and GLP-1 drugs, and inflation pressures on supply chains.
Some insurers have already dropped coverage of GLP-1 drugs for weight loss due to high costs and utilization.
Most ACA enrollees still receive subsidies that shield them from the full premium. Middle-income households above subsidy thresholds face the steepest increases. Leslie Dach, chair of Protect Our Care, said the increases resulted from a deliberate choice by Republicans.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) wrote that the program might as well be called Trumpcare given the lack of repeal efforts. The enhanced premium tax credits expired last year, contributing to the cost spikes.
Rates will be finalized later in the summer.
