Acting National Police Agency Commissioner Yoo Jae-seong apologized Friday at Incheon International Airport for controversy over alleged leaks of investigative information and possible destruction of evidence in a murder case. Yoo returned to South Korea on July 10 after cutting short a trip to the United States that had been scheduled to end the following day.
He had attended the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit.
"I am very sorry for causing concern to the public," Yoo told reporters immediately after landing, adding that he understood the gravity of the issue. The controversy centers on a May 2026 incident in Gwangju in which a 17-year-old female student was killed and a 17-year-old male student was targeted in an attempted murder. The father of the suspect serves as a police officer in the city.
Multiple officers at Gwangju's Gwangsan Police Station are under investigation on suspicions of leaking investigative information and destroying evidence related to the case. Yoo spoke to reporters at the airport before leaving the area.
