msnbc.comAdvance tickets for select IMAX 70mm screenings of Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" went on sale Thursday, June 4, 2026, prompting waits of up to an hour on some AMC websites before queues eased later in the day. @ABC reported that the delays stemmed from heavy demand rather than technical problems.
Only a limited number of theaters can project IMAX 70mm film, and IMAX has published the list of venues that will offer those screenings.
The film is scheduled to open in theaters on July 17, 2026. Universal Pictures is releasing the movie, the same studio that distributed Nolan's "Oppenheimer," which won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus.
The ensemble cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron and Robert Pattinson. The project reunites Nolan with Damon and Hathaway and marks his first collaboration with several younger stars. "The Odyssey" is based on the ancient Greek epic poem by Homer and follows Odysseus's journey home after the Trojan War.
The movie was shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, and many theaters are also planning special 70mm presentations in addition to the IMAX 70mm engagements. Additional theaters beyond the IMAX 70mm list are preparing 70mm screenings, offering another large-format option for audiences.
