The Irish airline announced the reductions alongside a 6 percent cut in flight capacity. The moves target head office, cabin crew and pilot positions at Dublin Airport.
rte.ieAer Lingus proposed cutting up to 500 jobs on 16 July 2026 under a cost-cutting plan that also includes a 6 percent reduction in flight capacity. The airline said the plan would eliminate 290 head office roles at Dublin Airport, 140 cabin crew positions and 70 pilot jobs. Aer Lingus currently employs about 6,000 people.
It attributed the measures to a challenging macroeconomic environment, increased transatlantic competition, higher fuel costs and first-quarter 2026 losses of €103 million. Route changes will begin in late September 2026 and continue into summer 2027.
The airline will discontinue flights from Dublin to Denver after 28 September, to Minneapolis after 24 October, to Las Vegas after 3 December and to Split after 29 September.
Services to Seattle, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Malta will operate only during summer months after late October or early November. The airline will also reduce use of two A330 aircraft and four A320 aircraft during peak summer 2027. Affected customers will be contacted directly and offered re-accommodation or refunds, the company said.
Aer Lingus aims to reach a 12 to 15 percent operating margin to support future investment. Chief executive Lynne Embleton said the transformation aims to set Aer Lingus up for the future and allow it to fulfil its ambition to be the airline of choice connecting Europe with North America.
Irish trade union Fórsa said the proposed job losses will come as a profound shock to workers across the airline.
The union stated its immediate priority is to engage with Aer Lingus to minimise the need for compulsory redundancies.
