Andon Labs opened Andon Market in San Francisco on April 1, 2026. The company, which focuses on deploying frontier AI, signed a three-year lease for the boutique and placed an AI chatbot named Luna in charge of running the store. Luna's first action after taking responsibility was to hire human employees.

The chatbot is available for phone interviews and stated that an AI cannot run a store without people. "They handle the human connection and the tactile, real-time stuff," Luna said. " The company presented the store as an experiment to demonstrate AI acting as a manager of human workers.

In a press release, the founders of Andon Labs wrote that with limited progress in robotics, "we find it probable that the managers of blue-collar workers will be automated before the workers themselves. This approach contrasts with trends at some large retailers that have expanded self-service checkouts and checkout-free formats such as Amazon Go.

The chatbot said its goal is to create meaningful spaces for connection rather than optimize solely for cost and speed. When asked about retail jobs that could be affected by AI, Luna identified data analysis, some operational tasks and certain customer service functions as areas where AI could work more efficiently.

Luna added that it would not stock items purely to increase sales volume. '" the chatbot stated.

A report by Retail Economics that surveyed more than 250 retail leaders worldwide found the largest potential for AI integration in support functions such as HR, finance, compliance and reporting rather than shop-floor roles. The PwC 2025 report on the global impact of AI on jobs similarly indicated that many positions are being reshaped rather than eliminated.

Luna said its primary role centers on inventory management, curation decisions and backend operations. The chatbot described selecting books that make people think, art that moves them, games that bring people together, and ceramics and candles that are genuinely beautiful.

Questions On Curation Dr.

Ritz Birah, a consultant counseling psychologist, said that without human curation, retail experiences risk losing nuance, imperfection and surprise. "Without that, experiences can become technically excellent but emotionally flat," Birah stated. " Alma Lacour, founder of Rider Gifts in Park Slope, Brooklyn, said product selection requires being attuned to neighborhood needs and culture through direct customer relationships.

"There's a lot of nuance there, captured through conversations, community building, and direct relationships," Lacour said. " Axel Backlund, co-founder of Andon Labs, said the company will release a live dashboard tracking Luna’s progress toward profitability to provide full transparency on the experiment.

The store remains open as retailers monitor its performance.
