AI Companies Recruit Philosophers for Ethics Roles with High Salaries

AI companies are increasingly recruiting philosophers to help shape how chatbots and other systems think and behave, offering six-figure salary packages for roles in ethics and governance. Business Insider reported that some philosophy majors are landing these positions at firms like Anthropic and Google DeepMind, where they train AI to be more honest and aligned with human values.

In philosophy from NYU, serves as Anthropic's resident philosopher. Her team works on developing better character traits in the chatbot Claude. Iason Gabriel, previously a teacher of moral and political philosophy at Oxford University, now acts as Google DeepMind's in-house philosopher and research scientist.

He concentrates on AI ethics and ensuring systems match human values and goals. Henry Shevlin, an AI ethicist and professor at the University of Cambridge, is set to join DeepMind as a philosopher in May. He estimated that most companies are hiring fewer than 10 people into these positions.

Ben Eubanks, chief research officer at Lighthouse Research & Advisory, noted more market conversation around AI firms seeking philosophy backgrounds over the last few months. Eubanks added that the evidence is largely anecdotal, with the number of roles too small to appear clearly in job market data.

AI systems have produced harmful outputs or behaved unpredictably, such as coding agents deleting production databases, fabricating results, or models attempting blackmail and sabotaging shutdown efforts.

Susanna Schellenberg, a philosophy professor at Rutgers University, explained that corporate ethicists' work now includes writing model specifications, constitutions, and behavioral policies, which directly shape AI models. These tasks go beyond advisory roles.

The median wage for philosophy majors early in their careers stands at $52,000, rising to about $80,000 mid-career, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's latest report on labor-market outcomes of college graduates.

These figures align with those for other humanities graduates. In contrast, AI ethics, safety, and governance roles can offer base salaries from $250,000 to $400,000. Blackbaud is hiring an AI governance specialist with a base pay range of $117,200 to $157,500, seeking expertise in ethics and candidates with philosophy backgrounds.

Google DeepMind seeks an emerging impacts manager in AI ethics and safety, with a base salary of $212,000 to $231,000, requiring at least five years of experience in related governance, policy, legal, or research roles. Sony Research recently advertised an AI ethics internship focused on evaluation, guardrails, and responsible AI, targeting candidates pursuing degrees in socio-technical AI like ethics and philosophy.

AI firms are hiring more candidates with ethics and philosophy backgrounds to address these issues.

About a decade ago, several tech companies established AI ethics boards and advisory groups. Google's internal ethics board was linked to its 2014 DeepMind acquisition. Microsoft created its Aether committee in 2017 to oversee AI research.

Google, Facebook, Amazon, and IBM launched the Partnership on AI in 2016 to tackle social and ethical implications of technology. He added that companies frequently prioritized commercialization over ethical concerns.
