A Cessna Caravan took off from a runway with the test pilot's hands off the controls while an AI system managed flight tasks. The Merlin Pilot system interpreted spoken instructions from a simulated air traffic controller and responded using a computerized voice.

Test pilot Matt Diamond issued the command "Authorize," after which the aircraft changed course. The system later aligned the plane for final approach, adjusted for crosswind, and completed the landing.

Boeing estimates airlines worldwide will need more than 600,000 new pilots over the next two decades. Aviation safety officials are also addressing pressure on the air traffic control system after recent close calls and accidents. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated the administration supports AI tools to reduce controller workload without replacing human oversight of the national airspace.

Matthew George said 80 percent of aviation accidents are caused by human error and that AI could help reduce that figure. S. Air Force for C-130 cargo planes. Stanford University researcher Mykel Kochenderfer said newer AI systems can handle a wider range of situations than traditional automation but require further hardening and trust-building before wider use.

Air Line Pilots Association president Jason Ambrosi said automation should support pilots and that two trained pilots remain the most important safety feature on airline flights. Merlin stated its goal is to place AI alongside human pilots rather than enable fully uncrewed passenger flights.
