ForbesThousands of Albanians have protested a planned luxury resort project on the Adriatic coast linked to Jared Kushner. The developments include a $1.4 billion project on Sazan island and a $4.7 billion project near Zvërnec. Kushner and Affinity Partners are in the early stages of the projects.
The Albanian government granted the Sazan plan strategic investor status in December 2024, allowing quicker approvals.
Forty-one environmental groups sent a letter to the Albanian government in January calling for suspension of the project. Anti-corruption prosecutors are investigating 2024 changes to laws that eased tourism development on protected land. Protests began in the spring after signs of construction appeared.
Demonstrators have cited videos showing private security guards removing people from the area. Officials stripped two security companies of their licenses and arrested one guard.
Trump described the project on a podcast as the culmination of her real estate experience and reflection on how she wants to live. She said the development would be a tangible manifestation of that vision.
Rama said the country must remain welcoming to investors and that there is no chance the investment will stop while he is in office. A spokesperson for Sazan Real Estate Development LLC said the focus remains on responsible stewardship and environmental enhancement.
The projects remain in negotiation with no final plans submitted and no construction timeline set. Kushner’s company will not be taxed for ten years during construction under the strategic investor agreement.
