A new album has been released that revives Yiddish songs recorded in Ukrainian ghettos during the Holocaust, Haaretz reported on July 19, 2026. The recordings were made by Soviet Jewish ethnomusicologist Moisei Beregovsky. They survived decades of censorship and near disappearance before reaching the new release.
One song describes a child in the Bershad ghetto watching strangers pray over his dying mother and carry her away for burial while ignoring him. The ghetto lay in present-day Ukraine under Romanian and Nazi German occupation. The album presents the songs as evidence of both suffering and the stories people created to endure it.
