Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Abdul El-Sayed for the Democratic nomination in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race. The endorsement came in an interview with the New York Times, where she said every Democrat sees the current moment as existential and that El-Sayed gives the party the best chance at winning.
El-Sayed, a former Michigan public health director, already has the backing of Bernie Sanders and leads the latest polls. His opponents include U.S. Representative Haley Stevens, who has support from senior Democratic leadership, and state Senator Mallory McMorrow, who has drawn backing from prominent Democrats.
El-Sayed’s platform includes banning tax incentives for large companies, new taxes on billionaires, eliminating medical debt, and strengthening anti-monopoly rules. He has also called for an end to blank-check military aid to Israel and other countries. The winner of the primary will face former Republican representative Mike Rogers in the November general election.
Rogers lost the 2024 Senate race in Michigan by less than half a percentage point. Ocasio-Cortez previously endorsed El-Sayed in his 2018 bid for governor. El-Sayed posted on X that he is deeply honored to receive the endorsement.
