Pope Leo XIV Visits Lampedusa, Lays Wreath at Migrant Graves

Pope Leo XIV visited Lampedusa island on July 4 and laid a wreath of flowers on the unmarked graves of shipwreck victims at a local cemetery. He stood alone on the rocky shoreline and looked out to sea before speaking with a migrant family, taking the children by the hand and standing with their pregnant mother at the Door of Europe monument.

Lampedusa lies 90 miles off the coast of Tunisia, covers 20 square kilometers and has a population of 6,000.

More than 360 people died in the island's worst shipwreck in 2013. The International Organization for Migration recorded 1,330 deaths or missing persons on the Central Mediterranean route in 2025. UNHCR reported more than 14,000 landings in Italy in the first six months of 2026, with nearly 60 percent arriving in Lampedusa.

In a speech the previous day, Pope Leo XIV called for moderation in U.S. public discourse and referenced successive waves of immigrants. He also described the U.S. administration's treatment of immigrants as inhuman.

Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to bless a plaque dedicated to Pope Francis at the pier where rescued migrants arrive and to celebrate Mass in a sports field on the island. He visited the Canary Islands last month and criticized human traffickers there. Filippo Ungaro, UNHCR spokesman, stated that the pope's presence sends a clear message at a time when the global political debate on migration is often framed around borders and deterrence rather than protection and shared responsibility.

Vanda Mainardi, 65, who traveled from northern Italy, said Lampedusa is a place of particular significance and that she came to testify to its commitment to welcome those seeking a better place to live.
