Amazon to Acquire Globalstar in $11.57 Billion Deal, Boosting Satellite Capabilities

Globalstar has a currently active constellation of about 50 satellites.
Globalstar started in 1991 as a satellite communications company. Globalstar has offered iPhone and Apple Watch users emergency SOS mode via its satellites since 2022. Apple took a 20% stake in Globalstar in 2024.
Amazon reached an agreement with Apple on Tuesday to continue offering the SOS functionality on its mobile devices.
Amazon Leo Commitments Andy Jassy said in an annual letter to shareholders last week that Leo has commitments from Delta Airlines, JetBlue, AT&T, Vodafone, DIRECTV Latin America, Australia's National Broadband Network, and NASA.
The commitments are to use Leo satellites for offerings and operations once more satellites come online. A rocket carrying Amazon satellites took off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in April 2025.
