Amazon develops new Alexa project for multistep AI tasks

Internal planning documents reviewed by Business Insider show Amazon is developing a new Alexa project to enable the assistant to complete several related actions within one interaction. " The upgrade would extend capabilities already present in the AI-powered assistant, which currently lets users book rides or buy tickets through partners.
Project costs and internal concerns One planning document from earlier this year called the project the "highest cost" new initiative within the Alexa+ overhaul and projected more than $100 million in GPU costs for 2026. The same document suggested delaying or scaling back the effort to ease cost pressures.
Separate planning documents from late last year show the company preparing hundreds of Nvidia GPUs to support the project and using an Anthropic Sonnet model for advanced reasoning and visual response functions during testing.
Alexa+ rollout Amazon has delayed the Alexa+ rollout multiple times before expanding availability in the U.S. earlier this year. Internal beta testing previously uncovered issues including hallucinations and inconsistent responses. " Amazon declined to comment on the new project.
