Amazon MGM Studios ended plans to release the completed movie 'Artificial' three months after announcing a $50 billion OpenAI partnership. The studio said it will seek another distributor for the film.
Amazon MGM Studios has dropped plans to release the completed movie "Artificial," directed by Luca Guadagnino and centered on Sam Altman's 2023 ouster and return at OpenAI. "We believe that 'Artificial' will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home," an Amazon spokesperson said.
" Guadagnino finished principal photography by October 2025.
The screenplay by Simon Rich dramatizes the five-day period that began when Altman was removed as OpenAI chief executive on November 17, 2023, and ended with his reinstatement on November 22, 2023. Andrew Garfield portrays Altman. Cooper Koch and Mark Rylance also appear in the cast.
The decision follows Amazon's late-February announcement of a $50 billion investment and cloud partnership with OpenAI. " Amazon MGM Studios previously paid $40 million for distribution rights to the documentary "Melania" and spent another $35 million on marketing and theatrical release. The film opened in January 2026 and did not recover its costs.
OpenAI and Guadagnino did not respond to requests for comment.
