Amazon Releases Kindle Scribe 2025 and Colorsoft E Ink Models
Amazon introduced the Kindle Scribe 2025 black-and-white model and the new Kindle Scribe Colorsoft with a color E Ink display. The devices feature stylus-based writing, book annotation tools and extended battery life. A reviewer tested both units for one week and compared them to competing products from ReMarkable and Kobo.
thurrott.comAmazon has released two new versions of its Kindle Scribe digital notebook, including the first color E Ink model in the Scribe line. The Kindle Scribe 2025 updates the previous black-and-white version with a redesigned chassis and improved high-contrast display.
The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft adds a color screen intended to improve the appearance of book covers, comics and highlighted annotations. The reviewer tested both devices for one week. Battery life on both models lasted the full test period without requiring a charge.
" Writing with the included Premium Pen stylus on both Scribe models produced a paper-like feel with slight friction from the pen's eraser end. The reviewer noted that color writing on the Scribe Colorsoft appeared immediately without the lag observed on the ReMarkable Paper Pro.
New templates added to the 2025 models include a daily planner divided into half-hour increments.
Canvas system converts handwritten notes into movable sticky notes that reflow with the text when annotating e-books. The color model allows users to apply five highlight colors and later filter annotations by color. The reviewer used yellow for alarming sections and blue for terms to research.
Limitations remain in the annotation system. Users cannot freely write or circle text directly on most e-books without triggering a text-reflow box. Writing is restricted to margins when viewing imported PDFs. The reviewer noted that Kobo's Libra Colour does not have this limitation.
The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is priced at $630.
The black-and-white Kindle Scribe 2025 is priced at $499. A lower-cost Scribe model without front lighting was announced at $430 but has not yet been released. The ReMarkable Paper Pro, which lacks an e-book store, is also priced at a premium level.
The new Scribe models are taller and narrower than the 2024 version after Amazon reduced thickness and removed the side bezel that previously aided one-handed use. The reviewer found the devices now require two hands to hold comfortably to avoid accidental page turns.
The Graphite color option continues, while the Colorsoft is also offered in a purple shade called Fig. The reviewer concluded that the color display is a worthwhile addition for comic book readers but that the black-and-white model with lighting may be sufficient for many users.
Both devices maintain Amazon's e-book ecosystem and long battery life as primary advantages over some competing digital notebooks.
