Andreeva Defeats Qualifier Chwalinska 6-3 6-2 to Win French Open Title

Mirra Andreeva defeated Maja Chwalinska 6-3 6-2 in the women’s singles final at the French Open on Saturday at Roland Garros. The eighth-ranked Andreeva, 19, claimed her first Grand Slam title and became the youngest player to win the women’s singles crown since Monica Seles, who was 18 when she captured her third straight French Open in 1992.

Chwalinska, ranked 114th and a qualifier, had sought to become the first qualifier to win the Roland Garros title.

Andreeva ended the match with a backhand cross-court winner on her first match point and dropped to her knees on the clay in celebration. The final was played under mostly sunny skies, though wind affected play. Chwalinska double-faulted on the opening point, but held serve first in the fifth game before Andreeva adjusted to the conditions and countered Chwalinska’s variety of spins and drop shots.

A strong Polish contingent filled parts of Court Philippe-Chatrier. Fans waved red-and-white flags and chanted “Ma-ja, Ma-ja” when Chwalinska was introduced. Mary Pierce, the 2000 champion who defeated Andreeva’s coach Conchita Martinez in that final, was scheduled to present the Suzanne Lenglen Cup.

Chwalinska entered the tournament outside the top 100 and at 500-1 odds before qualifying. She advanced through three qualifying rounds and four main-draw matches in only her third Grand Slam main draw. Andreeva reached the final after compiling 35 match wins this season, ending an opponent’s 17-match unbeaten streak on clay in the semifinal, and securing a title in Linz plus a runner-up finish in Madrid.

Andreeva had reached the semifinals at Roland Garros two years earlier. She has competed under neutral status without the Russian flag because of the war with Ukraine. In the semifinals she defeated Marta Kostyuk, who declined to shake hands afterward, consistent with the practice Ukrainian players have followed against Russian opponents since 2022.

In men’s doubles, Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos defeated Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten 6-4 6-2 to retain their title. Alexander Zverev is scheduled to face Flavio Cobolli in the men’s singles final on Sunday. More than $71 million in total prize money is being distributed at the tournament, with Andreeva receiving over $3 million for the victory.
