Andy Burnham enters 10 Downing Street as prime minister after Keir Starmer resigns

Andy Burnham became prime minister of the United Kingdom on Monday after Keir Starmer resigned and tendered his resignation to King Charles III. Burnham accepted the king's invitation to form a government, becoming the seventh British prime minister in the past 10 years. He appointed former defense minister John Healey as chancellor of the Exchequer.

Ed Miliband, who had sought the Treasury post, was named foreign secretary. Ed Miliband and Shabana Mahmood were seen walking up Downing Street ahead of a cabinet reshuffle. In his first speech outside 10 Downing Street, Burnham pledged to set out a 10-year plan for Britain.

He vowed to end rough sleeping and visited a homeless shelter on his first day in office. Burnham won 379 of 403 Labour MP nominations unopposed to become party leader before the transition. Larry the cat, the official Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office who has lived at 10 Downing Street since 2011, awaited Burnham on Monday morning.

Six prime ministers have left office during the cat's tenure.
