Andy Burnham names John Healey finance minister and Ed Miliband foreign secretary

New UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham named former defense secretary John Healey as chancellor of the exchequer on July 20. Healey resigned that post last month after accusing then-premier Keir Starmer of endangering Britain by refusing to commit to spending 3 percent of GDP on defense by 2030.

In his new role Healey will oversee fiscal policy for a major NATO ally and the world's fifth-largest economy.

Burnham also appointed former energy chief Ed Miliband as foreign secretary. Miliband played a key role in the UK's resistance to joining the US campaign against Iran, Semafor reported. The appointments place Healey under pressure to deliver the higher defense spending target he had demanded from his predecessor.
