A panel of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals on July 8 rejected a request by President Trump and other Kennedy Center board members to stay a lower court order requiring removal of Trump's name from the building. The unsigned order stated that the name has already been taken off the facade.
The panel, which includes Trump appointee Gregory Katsas, found that Kennedy Center officials failed to show they would be irreparably injured without a stay. The judges also rejected the board's claim that removing the name could harm fundraising and contribute to financial decline, stating that Trump and fellow board members failed to support the assertion with specific facts or evidence. District Judge Christopher Cooper had ruled in May 2026 that the name must be removed after the board voted in December to rename the building the Trump-Kennedy Center. Cooper also voided a board vote to close the center for renovations starting in July 2026 and directed leadership to provide an update on programming and renovation plans from a board meeting expected in mid-July.
