A fragment of an ancient stele from the reign of Assyrian King Ashurbanipal was found at the Bab Shamash site. The piece was recovered in Iraq's Nineveh province and moved for conservation.

Archaeologists recovered a fragment of an ancient stele at the Bab Shamash site in Iraq's Nineveh province. The fragment dates to the reign of Assyrian King Ashurbanipal approximately 2,600 years ago. The stele fragment was moved to the Inspectorate's headquarters for initial restoration work.
Officials said the piece will undergo further study once conservation is complete. A photograph released by Iraq's General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage shows the fragment after recovery on July 17, 2026.
