Hassan crossed his arms in an “X” gesture to report alleged racist abuse, but the referee did not halt play and ended the match minutes later. Egypt had advanced from the round of 32 by beating Australia 3-2 on penalties. Coach Hossam Hassan carried the Palestinian flag onto the pitch after that victory and dedicated the win to the Egyptian and Palestinian people.
Egyptian fans gathered outside the team hotel to welcome the players. Palestinians in Gaza watched the match on screens amid rubble while displaying Egyptian flags, Al Jazeera reported.
