Switzerland Advances Past Colombia on Penalties to Reach World Cup Quarterfinals

Switzerland defeated Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout Tuesday at BC Place in Vancouver to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup. The match remained scoreless through 120 minutes. Davinson Sánchez struck his penalty against the crossbar.
Cucho Hernández had his attempt saved by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Rubén Vargas converted the decisive kick for Switzerland. Jhon Lucumí headed against the crossbar in extra time. Jáminton Campaz shot over the bar after a defensive error by Granit Xhaka.
Switzerland played without Johan Manzambi, who suffered a knee contusion in training Monday. Manzambi had scored three goals and recorded two assists in Switzerland's first four matches. The result marks Switzerland's first World Cup quarterfinal appearance since it hosted the tournament in 1954.
It is also the first time Switzerland has won multiple knockout matches in a single World Cup. Colombia reached the quarterfinals in 2014 but has now been eliminated on penalties in consecutive tournaments after losing to England in 2018. Switzerland will face Argentina in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino attended the match, which drew a sellout crowd largely supporting Colombia.
