Argentina defeated England 2-1 in the 2026 World Cup semifinal on Wednesday in Atlanta, Time reported. The result ended England's hopes of reaching its first final since 1966. England took a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon scored from a Morgan Rogers cross.
The team then shifted to a defensive posture under manager Thomas Tuchel. Argentina equalized in the 85th minute when Enzo Fernández scored from a Lionel Messi pass. Lautaro Martínez headed the winner in the second minute of stoppage time from a Messi cross after Alexis Mac Allister's shot hit the post.
Messi, 39, recorded his eighth goal and fourth assist of the tournament and has contributed to every one of Argentina's seven wins. Argentina last won the World Cup in 2022. Argentina will face Spain, the 2010 champion, in the final on Sunday.
England has not won the tournament since defeating West Germany in 1966.
