Army Cooks Compete in Eighth Army Philip A. Connelly Field Feeding Evaluation

CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 581st Field Feeding Company, Division Special Troops Battalion, Division Sustainment Brigade, attached a mobile kitchen’s slingload lines to a Chinook helicopter on May 8 2026 at Camp Humphreys during the Philip A. Connelly Competition.

The competition drew a team of Champion Brigade culinarians who executed field feeding tasks at the Eighth Army level. Per the U.S. Department of Defense release, the event tests units on their ability to provide high-quality meals in forward environments using tactical kitchen equipment.

The Philip A. Connelly Competition evaluates food service personnel on recipe accuracy, food safety, equipment maintenance and presentation under field conditions. A single brigade team advances from the Eighth Army evaluation to higher-level Department of the Army judging.

The 581st Field Feeding Company supports Division Sustainment Brigade operations that deliver hot meals to thousands of soldiers daily when not engaged in competition.

The competition produces a ranked brigade that becomes the standard-bearer for Eighth Army field feeding doctrine through the remainder of the training cycle. Units that place must update their standard operating procedures with lessons from the evaluation before the next fiscal year begins Oct.

1 2026. The winning team’s techniques then propagate through Eighth Army training schedules for the following 12 months.

This marks the annual Eighth Army iteration of the Connelly program, which the Army has run since the 1960s to improve combat service support readiness. The 2026 event continues a sequence of successive command-level evaluations that feed into the Department of the Army Philip A. Connelly Awards Program.
