Arsenal Manager Says He Had Doubts About Winning Title
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said external doubts led him to question whether he was the right person to deliver a Premier League title. The team ended a 22-year title drought after a 2-1 win away to Crystal Palace.
bbc.co.ukArsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he had doubts about whether he was the right person to win the Premier League title after a series of second-place finishes. Speaking after the team secured the trophy, Arteta told Sky Sports that external commentary had prompted him to consider whether another manager should complete the task.
"There are doubts... I think doubts and an understanding that maybe, OK, I've been able to take them all the way here but maybe somebody else has to come and do the final job," Arteta said.
Arteta described the achievement as bringing both joy and relief. He credited his inner circle for maintaining belief during periods of self-doubt and said the external pressure had increased the team's resolve. "I think we showed an incredible connection, an incredible commitment, and an incredible courage," Arteta told Sky Sports.
The manager said attention would now turn to the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain scheduled for Saturday in Budapest. "This shirt represents something else. Now we have the opportunity to create new history in our club. I am convinced we are going to do it," he added.
Club captain Martin Odegaard said the squad had celebrated the league title on Tuesday but would delay further festivities until after the Champions League final. "We had a great celebration on Tuesday. The vibes are unreal. Everyone is so happy. But we have another big final in just a week, so we'll wait to party until after that," Odegaard told Sky Sports.
Odegaard described reaching both the Premier League title and the Champions League final as living a dream and said the team would prepare accordingly.
